What’s New: Polls and Twitter

Have you noticed some new things on our blog? We changed the message block on the upper-left; you’ll now see that where we used to have an update about the community service project for the Glass Slipper Project, we now have an offer for a FREE ticket to the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo. Watch that area for as we update messages.

Twitter logoRight under the message blog, you’ll see a new section titled “Follow Us on Twitter.” What is Twitter? It’s a method of sending short messages.

With these short messages (called “tweets”), I can share messages that other sewists, sewing companies or anyone interested in sewing are tweeting. Sometimes these are coupons; messages from other sewing blogs; new projects or patterns others have created to share with you that you might otherwise not know about.

It doesn’t have to be complicated; and, no, you don’t have to have a Twitter account (not another thing, Tina!). You can follow along on the left-hand side or click the “Follow Us on Twitter” link and it will take you to a page of all the tweets I’ve sent. You’ll see that my Twitter “handle” is “sewchicago.” I started it for the SewChicago NG, but since we’ve launched the ASG Chicago chapter blog, I’ll be tweeting things that are of interest to all chapter members’ sewing interests.

Through Twitter, this week I’ve been able to connect a woman to the Detroit ASG group as well as provide links to various sewing projects for other tweeps (people who send tweets.) Twitter is like talking out loud and if you strike up a conversation and meet someone new (like the lady in Detroit), then it’s a way to find information that you otherwise wouldn’t.

Today, I’ll be sending tweets with links to various sewing-related videos for what I call Video Tweet Day. You can watch for them throughout the day from here or on the Twitter page. I’ll post the full list of links tomorrow in case you miss some. If you’re a tweep, the hashtag to follow is: #vidtweetday.

I hope you’ll like the Twitter section. I’ve found there’s so much conversation going on in the Internet and tweet-world that there’s no way that I can write a blog about each thing. If you have any questions, post them in the comments section and I’ll answer them here.

Poll of the Month

Your opinion counts

If you look at the top-right tab, you’ll see a new tab titled “Poll of the Month.” We want to talk with you; exchange ideas; get feedback from you; see what you’re interested so we can make this a better chapter. So, periodically…probably monthly… we’ll post a new poll on this page.

Sometimes the poll will be about what you’re sewing or what you’re interested in sewing. Other times it might be to ask your opinion about something the advisory board is considering. It could be serious stuff or silly stuff. But we just want to talk with you. The polls here are completely anonymous. If we ever have a poll that is not anonymous, we’ll let you know.

We’re always trying new things to capture your interest, dear readers, as well as harness the power and capabilities the Internet has to offer. We hope that you’ve been enjoying the blog and like what we’re adding to it. I really think it’s a great way to bring our large chapter closer together.
